HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 11

Petitioning the Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service to issue a stamp recognizing the contributions of Mother Jones.

Whereas, Mother Jones was born Mary Harris on May 1, 1830, in Cork County, Ireland; and

Whereas, Mother Jones campaigned for social reform, civil rights and justice for the working class. She made no distinction between race, color or religion; and
Whereas, Mother Jones was a lifelong champion of children's rights, fighting to put an end to child labor and the abuse of children in the workplace. She traveled all over the country organizing mine workers, textile workers and railroad workers; and
Whereas, Mother Jones's contributions have never been completely recognized or acknowledged; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature of the State of West Virginia respectfully requests the Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service to issue a stamp in the likeness of Mary Harris, "Mother Jones"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates is hereby directed to forward copies of this resolution to the Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service and to the Mother Jones Stamp Campaign Headquarters, 3354 Edwardsville Road, Edwardsville, Illinois 62025.
